The Washington Capitals have already secured their place in the playoffs, and the Winnipeg Jets are almost there. A victory against the Buffalo Sabres on Sunday would have confirmed it for the Jets, but unfortunately, that didn`t happen.

These two teams are scheduled to play each other on Tuesday night (8 p.m. ET on ESPN+), and there`s a possibility of a rematch in the Stanley Cup Final. Currently, both teams are expected to face the second wild-card team in their respective conferences. Could they have a preference among the teams currently vying for those wild-card spots?

Potential Opponents for Winnipeg Jets

For the Winnipeg Jets, the St. Louis Blues currently hold the second wild-card spot in the Western Conference. This season, the Jets have a 2-1 record against the Blues, including a shootout win. They are set to play each other again on April 7th. Another possibility is the Calgary Flames. The Jets also have a 2-1 record against the Flames this season, although their last game was in January.

The Utah Hockey Club is also in contention for the wild-card spot, and the Jets have a 2-1 record against them as well. The Vancouver Canucks are another team with a chance, and the Jets are 1-1 against them with one more game scheduled for this Saturday.

Potential Opponents for Washington Capitals

The Washington Capitals are currently projected to face the Montreal Canadiens in the first round. The Capitals won two out of three games against Montreal, with their single loss being in overtime. If the New York Rangers become their opponent instead, the Capitals will be looking to avenge being swept by them in last year`s playoffs. Based on regular-season results, the Capitals seem likely to succeed, having won all three games against the Rangers this season. Washington has won their only game against the New York Islanders this season, with two more games to play.

The Capitals have also performed well against the Columbus Blue Jackets, winning both games played so far with two more games scheduled in April, and against the Detroit Red Wings, with two wins this month after losing to them in December.

Overall, both the Capitals and Jets seem to be in a favorable position as they approach the first round of the playoffs, at least based on current standings and matchups.

With less than a month remaining until the end of the regular season on April 17th, we will continue to provide updates on the NHL playoff race. We will keep you informed on all playoff scenarios and the teams competing for a better position in the 2025 NHL draft lottery.

Race for the No. 1 pick

The NHL uses a draft lottery to determine the order of the first round, so the team that finishes in last place is not guaranteed the No. 1 selection. As of 2021, a team can move up a maximum of 10 spots if it wins the lottery, so only 11 teams are eligible for the No. 1 pick. Full details on the process are here. Matthew Schaefer, a defenseman for the OHL`s Erie Otters, is No. 1 on the draft board.
