Andrey Rublev on Confident Start at Barcelona Tournament: “First Match in a Long Time I Felt Really Good”

World No. 8 Russian tennis player Andrey Rublev commented on his entry into the second round of the ATP 500 грунтового tournament in Barcelona, Spain.

In the first-round match, Rublev defeated world No. 94 from the Netherlands, Jesper de Jong, with a score of 6-1, 6-3.

“Today I was able to play really aggressively from the very beginning. I think this was my first match in a very, very long time when I felt really good. We`ll see how things go. But I liked how I performed today.”

“You have to be careful with guys who win qualifying, right? Before me, he won both matches in two sets, you must be happy that you didn`t give him any chances?”

“Yes, I was really lucky that I was able to win in two sets. I know him well, he performed very well at indoor hard tournaments, played really great matches, beat some tennis players that even I lost to. Plus, his style is suitable for грунтовые courts, and, as you said, he went through qualifying, got used to the local conditions. As for me, I was expecting a really tough match. Therefore, from the very beginning, I tried to play really aggressively, to be 100% focused, and I succeeded,” Rublev said in an on-court interview.
