Brandon Moreno: Popularity Could Secure Title Fight

The former flyweight champion is once again a top contender, aiming for another shot at the title.

Brandon Moreno defeated Steve Erceg in Mexico City, marking a positive turn after previous setbacks in the same location.

With two consecutive victories and strong performances, `The Assassin Baby` is back in title contention after losing his belt at UFC 290.

However, he faces competition for the next title fight from fighters like Kai Kara-France and Manel Kape, all eager to challenge Alexandre Pantoja.

A significant point is Moreno`s history of losses to Pantoja. Despite the possibility of a different outcome in a fourth fight, Pantoja has won every previous encounter.

Brandon Moreno Argues He Draws More Attention Than Other Flyweight Contenders

Alexandre Pantoja has already defeated the leading contenders in the flyweight division.

Pantoja has wins over Moreno (three times), Brandon Royval (twice), Manel Kape (in 2021), and Kai Kara-France (in 2016 on The Ultimate Fighter).

Kape might be considered the most likely challenger currently, given his recent winning streak and the fact that his loss to Pantoja was in his UFC debut after transitioning from RIZIN.

Nevertheless, Moreno is regaining his best form, and his performances are earning him recognition, even if a fourth match against Pantoja might seem less appealing to some.

If Moreno continues his winning streak against other flyweight contenders, he will become impossible to ignore for another title opportunity against his rival.

Following his victory over Steve Erceg, Moreno discussed his future in an ESPN post-fight interview.

He suggested that one factor could give him an edge over other deserving contenders for the next title shot.

“I want to fight for the title. The flyweight division is in a strange place. Manel, Kai Kara-France, and Royval all deserve a title shot, and with this win, I believe I`ve also put myself in the conversation. I think I bring more attention to the division than the other guys.”

Brandon Moreno`s Point May Be Valid, But It`s Not Guaranteed

Brandon Moreno is likely correct in his assessment that he generates more fan interest compared to other contenders.

The issue lies in the matchup itself. Even though Moreno is a draw, a fourth fight with Alexandre Pantoja might not be highly anticipated, despite their previous fight at UFC 290 being considered one of the best of 2023.

This is possibly why Manel Kape is currently favored, as a fight between him and Pantoja presents a fresh matchup, even if their fighting styles are familiar.

Despite two strong performances since his return, Moreno might need another decisive victory to secure a fight for the flyweight championship again.
