Dortmund vs. Barcelona: Champions League Quarter-Final Preview

After a 4-0 victory in the first leg in Barcelona, Hansi Flick`s La Liga-leading team will face Borussia Dortmund in Germany for the return leg at Signal Iduna Park on Tuesday. The Catalan giants dominated the first match in Spain, thanks to goals from Raphinha, Lamine Yamal, and a brace from former Dortmund forward Robert Lewandowski. Lewandowski returns to his former stadium, where he played from 2010 to 2014, marking one of the most successful eras for the iconic German team under Jurgen Klopp. Barcelona is expected to advance to the semi-finals and the top four of the UEFA Champions League, where they will meet the winner of the other quarter-final tie between Inter and Bayern Munich. The first legs are scheduled for April 29-30, and the second legs a week later.

The First Leg

FC Barcelona secured a solid 4-0 win at their home stadium, thanks to an early goal from Raphinha, followed by a brace from former Dortmund striker Lewandowski, and a final goal from Spanish wonderkid Lamine Yamal, in one of the strongest performances of Hansi Flick`s team this season.

What FC Barcelona is Saying

Former Bayern coach Hansi Flick spoke ahead of Tuesday`s game at the pre-match press conference. “I was very happy to win 4-0 in Barcelona, but tomorrow will not be an easy game. The team should enjoy what they are doing, and we are ready for it. We want to play well for ourselves and for the travelling fans who always support us. We will not let our concentration drop. We are only thinking about our game against Dortmund. The rest is for the future. We are not looking any further ahead. Our idea of football is to always do our best. There is a lot of quality in our team, and we always take things one game at a time. Playing Dortmund in the Champions League quarter-finals at their stadium will always be difficult. We need 100% concentration.”

Predicted Lineups

BVB XI: Gregor Kobel, Waldemar Anton, Emre Can, Ramy Bensebaini, Julian Ryerson, Carney Chukwuemeka, Pascal Gross, Julian Brandt, Daniel Svensson, Serhou Guirassy, Karim Adeyemi.

FC Barcelona XI: Wojciech Szczesny, Jules Kounde, Ronald Araujo, Pau Cubarsi, Gerard Martin, Gavi, Frenkie de Jong, Pedri, Lamine Yamal, Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha.

Player to Watch

Raphinha, FC Barcelona – The Brazilian winger scored the opening goal in the first leg in Barcelona and has been impressive this season. He has already scored 28 goals and provided 22 assists to his teammates in 46 games across all competitions, making him one of the most prolific strikers of the year. His name has also emerged as a possible candidate for the 2025 Ballon d`Or, but much will depend on the team`s performances in the coming weeks. If Barcelona wins the Champions League, he will clearly become a strong contender for the most prestigious individual award.

Key Storyline

Lewandowski`s Return to Dortmund – The Polish striker will return to Dortmund`s home stadium, where he played from 2010 to 2014, scoring 74 goals in 131 games, and where he won two historic Bundesliga titles and other domestic trophies under Klopp. After playing for Bayern Munich from 2014 to 2022, Lewandowski moved to Barcelona in the summer of 2022 and immediately proved his importance to his new team. Lewandowski will face his past in what is likely to be an emotional night for him.

Prediction

The Spanish giants are expected to win again after their solid 4-0 victory in the first leg and should easily qualify for the semi-finals, where they will face the winner of the tie between Inter and Bayern Munich. Pick: FC Barcelona 3, BVB 1.
