Dustin Poirier recently executed his signature guillotine choke, leading to MMA journalist Mike Bohn temporarily losing consciousness.
The accomplished lightweight fighter, a former interim champion, is renowned for attempting the jumping guillotine technique during his bouts, although he has notably never secured a finish with this specific move in official competition. He came exceptionally close to finishing Khabib Nurmagomedov with it and also utilized it effectively en route to defeating Dan Hooker.
Despite its lack of success in fights, Poirier`s guillotine is reportedly a potent tool in training. A courageous reporter discovered this firsthand during a recent visit to American Top Team. The entire event was captured on video, illustrating the moment the journalist lost consciousness and his subsequent reaction.
Dustin Poirier Chokes Out MMA Reporter Mike Bohn in Training Clip
While in Florida for UFC 314, MMA Junkie`s Mike Bohn visited American Top Team in Coconut Creek to interview several prominent fighters. He spoke with athletes including Renato Moicano, Dakota Ditcheva, and particularly Dustin Poirier.
His conversation with Poirier gained significant media attention, accumulating over 312,000 views within a single week. However, their interaction wasn`t confined solely to the interview. Bohn also participated in a training session, determined to personally assess the effectiveness of Poirier`s notorious guillotine.
Poirier humorously commented on his past fight attempts with the move, stating, “I’ve jumped a thousand, missed a thousand.” He mentioned that Grant Dawson originally taught him the technique, which he later passed on to Chris Duncan, who has successfully landed it twice in his fights.
Within moments of Poirier applying the choke, Bohn`s arm went limp, and he became unconscious. Poirier then lightheartedly quipped to the camera: “Don’t be silly, jump the guilly, it works in practice, doesn’t work in fights!”
Bohn later recounted his experience in an article, describing it by saying: “All I felt was my vision closing in, then the feeling of a jolt, which turned out to be Mateusz Gamrot holding up my legs and shaking the blood circulation back into my brain as I regained consciousness.”
Dustin Poirier Expected to Retire This Summer
Poirier anticipates having just one more opportunity to land the guillotine finish in what is expected to be his final fight, concluding an illustrious career spanning 16 years and 40 professional bouts. He is rumored to headline UFC 318 in July, with potential opponents being discussed, including possible trilogy matchups against Max Holloway and Justin Gaethje.

His victory over Holloway in 2019 secured him the interim UFC championship, although he was later defeated by Khabib Nurmagomedov in their undisputed title unification contest. Poirier holds memorable victories over notable fighters like Gaethje, Eddie Alvarez, and Conor McGregor, with his wins over McGregor significantly boosting his superstar status.
Despite three attempts to claim the undisputed UFC lightweight title, Poirier was unsuccessful on each occasion. His most recent title challenge last summer in Newark ended in a fifth-round loss to Islam Makhachev, who now holds the record for the most successful lightweight title defenses.
