AC Milan`s search for defensive reinforcements has hit a significant snag. English left-back Archie Brown, who had reportedly been a primary target for the Italian club, is now on the verge of joining Turkish side Fenerbahçe, managed by none other than José Mourinho.
For days, reports suggested Milan was in pole position to secure the signature of the 21-year-old defender from Belgian club KAA Gent. Milan had identified Brown as a suitable profile to strengthen their left flank, a position needing attention following the departure of key player Theo Hernandez.
However, the transfer market often delivers unexpected twists, and this saga is a prime example. In a late, decisive move, Fenerbahçe entered the fray and, critically, tabled a more attractive financial offer to the player. This development appears to have swung the balance in favour of the Istanbul giants overnight.
Brown is now expected to travel to Turkey imminently to undergo medical examinations and finalize his transfer to Fenerbahçe. This leaves AC Milan executives in a rather awkward position, having seemingly been outmanoeuvred for a priority target.
Adding to Milan`s potential defensive woes, there are also concerns that another reported target, Doué from Strasbourg, may also become increasingly difficult to sign. With the start of the competitive season, marked by a Coppa Italia match against Bari on August 17, fast approaching, the urgency to secure full-backs is mounting.
While missing out on a transfer target is not an unprecedented event in football, losing a player who was reportedly close to signing, especially to a club outside of Europe`s traditional top leagues (albeit one managed by a high-profile coach), has been interpreted by many as a significant setback for Milan`s transfer market efforts this summer. The quest to adequately replace departing players and bolster the squad`s depth continues, now under increased pressure.
