Jack Della Maddalena faces a significant challenge against pound-for-pound elite Islam Makhachev in what is slated as his first title defense, yet a former opponent believes he possesses the capability to win.
Danny Roberts was among Della Maddalena`s initial opponents in the UFC, encountering him early in Della Maddalena`s ascent towards the welterweight title. Notably, Roberts was the last fighter Della Maddalena knocked out before his recent victory over Gilbert Burns, which secured him a shot at Belal Muhammad.
Roberts is scheduled to debut in the PFL tomorrow night in Brussels against undefeated Patrick Habirora. Meanwhile, Della Maddalena, presented here as the UFC world champion, is reportedly set to defend his belt against the highly-regarded lightweight champion, Islam Makhachev, anticipated for November.
Della Maddalena`s Strategy: Make Makhachev `Feel Human`
Roberts suggests the crucial factor in overcoming Islam Makhachev is penetrating his seemingly invincible presence. He emphasized that Della Maddalena should concentrate on his own skills rather than being intimidated by his opponent`s impressive record.
“Everyone is human, ultimately,” Roberts stated. “There`s been a mystique surrounding fighters from Russia and Dagestan, particularly since Khabib, who achieved legendary status. This has created an impression of near-invincibility associated with that region in the fighting world.”

“I`ve faced a fighter from that background before, and my coach advised at the time, `Let`s go in there and make them feel human.` They are indeed just human, so the goal is to challenge them physically.”
“Experiencing being in the cage with JDM, you instantly sense the pressure and power in his strikes. Watching his subsequent fights has shown his significant development. Without question, he is a formidable contender.”
“I truly believe he can achieve the upset,” Roberts asserted. “Some might disagree, but I`ve been in the ring with him. I can personally attest that he possesses exceptional talent.”
Della Maddalena Rated Roberts` Toughest Career Opponent
Roberts has shared the octagon with notable fighters like Mike Perry and Michel Pereira. However, he stated that the brief three-and-a-half minutes against Della Maddalena were sufficient to confirm that the Australian fighter was the most challenging opponent of his career.
“Look, he`s the champion now, so he`s undeniably the best opponent I`ve faced,” he continued. “Was it the ideal time for me, with everything aligning? Perhaps not. But setting that aside, just observing his demeanor, how casual and composed he appeared, indicates the caliber of a top-tier athlete.”
“He certainly projects that aura. Our fight was brief, and I didn`t get a chance to talk to him afterward; it felt like I was just a step on his path. When I fought him, he was already on a significant winning streak, around 12 victories.”
“Yes, he is absolutely a formidable presence. Regardless of the outcome of his fight against Makhachev, the world will see his true capabilities. That`s my conviction.”
