Francis Ngannou, the former UFC heavyweight champion, made an unexpected appearance at the promotion`s event for the first time in almost two years. His visit was linked to supporting Kamaru Usman, who was preparing for his fight at UFC Atlanta.
Ngannou left the UFC controversially at the beginning of 2024, while still the reigning champion. Since then, he has signed with PFL and had high-profile boxing matches against Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua.
Despite a strained relationship with the UFC leadership, particularly Dana White, Ngannou joined Usman on stage during the ceremonial weigh-ins before Kamaru`s fight against Joaquin Buckley. They are close friends and often support each other at competitions.
Ngannou`s Surprise Appearance at UFC Atlanta
The appearance of `The Predator` came as a complete surprise to fans. Kamaru Usman, known as `The Nigerian Nightmare`, was returning to the octagon after his loss to Khamzat Chimaev in 2023. Ngannou, even wearing UFC gear, was in his corner, highlighting the significance of this support.
Speculation on Ngannou`s Potential UFC Return
Recently, the possibility of Ngannou himself returning to the UFC has been actively discussed. His coach, Eric Nicksick, hinted at such an option. The main goal could be a super-fight against the current undisputed heavyweight champion, Jon Jones.
Nicksick commented on the situation:
“Enough time has passed, I would love to see them mend these fences and get back to competing in the UFC.”
He added that for Francis, it`s more about athletic competition than money:
“For him, the motivation isn`t about money, it`s about competition. And the best competition is in the UFC.”
