Inter Miami Secures Significant Prize Money at Club World Cup After Advancing

Inter Miami has officially qualified for the knockout stage of the Club World Cup, an achievement bringing significant sporting prominence and a substantial financial bonus.

The Herons secured their spot following a 2-2 draw against Brazil`s Palmeiras on Monday in their final Group A match. Despite losing a 2-0 lead, the result ensured they finished second in the group, three points clear of third-placed FC Porto. Their qualification was significantly boosted by Lionel Messi`s performance in a 2-1 victory over Porto on Thursday, making them the sole non-South American club to defeat a European opponent in the tournament to date.

Miami will be the only MLS team competing in the Round of 16 and potentially the only team from outside Europe or South America to reach the knockout phase. While they benefited from a favorable group draw, the competition level will increase significantly; they are set to face Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain in the Round of 16 on Sunday.

Here is a detailed look at the prize money Inter Miami has earned in the Club World Cup thus far.

Prize Money Earned by Inter Miami

Simply by reaching the Round of 16, Inter Miami will receive $7.5 million. This is a substantial amount for teams from the Concacaf region, although Inter Miami is not considered a financially struggling club.

This figure is in addition to the $9.55 million they secured just for participating in the group stage. Furthermore, Miami earned an extra $4 million based on their performance and results during their Group A matches.

Distribution of Prize Money

How this money will be allocated is a key point of contention for MLS clubs. A dispute exists between the league and the MLS Players Association regarding the portion players are entitled to. The current collective bargaining agreement limits player earnings from external competitions to a collective maximum of $1 million per team. While both sides agree this clause needs updating, they significantly disagree on the terms: MLS proposes players receive 20% of total earnings, whereas the Players Association seeks 40%.

  • Round of 16: $7.5 million
  • Quarterfinals: $13.125 million
