Jamie Vardy Takes Injured Referee’s Whistle, Blows It to Stop Premier League Game So Official Could Get Help

In a game where both teams were already facing relegation to the Championship, Leicester City icon Jamie Vardy made a significant impact during their 2-0 victory over Southampton at the King Power Stadium on Saturday. Vardy, who is in his final season with the club, not only scored a goal but also played a crucial role in assisting referee David Webb during the match.

The notable incident occurred in the 22nd minute when referee David Webb was accidentally struck by Leicester forward Jordan Ayew and fell to the ground, clearly in pain. As concerned players gathered around him, Jamie Vardy took initiative. Recognizing that Webb couldn`t blow his whistle to stop the game – a fundamental rule in football – Vardy quickly grabbed the official`s whistle and blew it himself to halt play so the referee could receive attention. Webb was eventually able to walk off the pitch under his own power before being replaced by Phil Sharp. The stoppage lasted for almost 12 minutes.

Leicester manager Ruud van Nistelrooy commented on the situation after the match: “I felt sorry for the ref. He hit a brick wall called Jordan Ayew. That is not easy. And Jamie Vardy blew his whistle to stop the game, so we helped him out there.”

Vardy is well-known for his memorable moments and actions throughout his time at Leicester City, so it seemed fitting that he was at the heart of this unique event, even getting to use the referee`s whistle. His illustrious career with the Foxes includes leading them to the Premier League, setting a record for scoring in 11 consecutive top-flight games, and winning the historic Premier League title in the 2015-16 season. He has undeniably achieved immense things with the club.

While Leicester City is returning to the Championship, Vardy is expected to play his final home game at the King Power Stadium on May 18th against Ipswich Town, another relegated side. This match presents an opportunity for Vardy to receive a positive send-off. At 38, his next career step remains unknown, but he leaves behind a wealth of cherished memories from his journey in the Premier League with Leicester City, and Saturday`s event was the latest addition.
