LA Protests Prompt Mexico National Team Hotel Switch Ahead of Gold Cup

Ahead of the Concacaf Gold Cup, which begins this weekend, the Mexican national soccer team has changed its hotel accommodations in Los Angeles. Due to safety concerns, the team, known as El Tri, has relocated from its initially planned downtown Los Angeles location to Long Beach. This move is intended to avoid potential unrest in the downtown area. Mexico is set to commence its Gold Cup campaign on Saturday, June 14, facing the Dominican Republic.

The relocation decision stems from anti-ICE protests that have been ongoing in the Los Angeles area, reportedly entering their fifth night. With National Guard troops and U.S. Marines being deployed in the city, Concacaf granted permission for this late change to the team`s lodging.

Mexico, the current reigning champions of the Concacaf Gold Cup, are aiming for their third consecutive win in a regional tournament, having also secured the Concacaf Nations League title in March. Competing in Group A, they are scheduled to face Costa Rica, Suriname, and the Dominican Republic. This tournament serves as their final competitive event before the 2026 World Cup, which Mexico will co-host alongside Canada and the United States.
