Legendary UFC striker offers Carlos Prates the smoke and ‘maybe a few cigarettes’ post-fight

A renowned UFC striker has proposed a `striking extravaganza` bout against fellow welterweight Carlos Prates.

Carlos Prates, known as `The Fighting Nerd`, made a significant impact in the UFC Welterweight division, achieving four consecutive knockout victories early in his Octagon career. The #13 ranked contender recently stepped up in competition, facing #7 ranked Ian Machado Garry at UFC Kansas City.

Despite nearly finishing Machado Garry with strikes in the fifth round, Prates was unable to secure the knockout win. He ultimately lost the fight via unanimous decision, with Machado Garry utilizing his wrestling effectively and outpointing him on the feet.

Shortly after his recent bout, Prates received an intriguing challenge from a veteran UFC welterweight.

Stephen Thompson Calls for Striking-Only Fight with Carlos Prates

Still holding a position in the top-15 rankings, Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson is a two-time UFC title challenger with extensive experience in his 21-fight UFC career. Thompson is widely recognized as one of the premier strikers to compete in the Octagon, showcasing his karate background for over a decade.

The 42-year-old has faced tough challenges recently, including bouts against grappling specialists like Shavkat Rakhmonov and Belal Muhammad. Having encountered several wrestling-heavy opponents, Thompson expressed keen interest in a fight with Prates, who is celebrated for his knockout power.

Speaking on MMA Today with RJ Clifford, Thompson stated, “It will be a a a striking extravaganza. I’m not Ian Garry, he’s good at the grappling. He’s good at the wrestling.”

Thompson added, “Me and Prates, we want the fight to stay standing. We wanna see who the best striker is in the UFC. I think that would be an amazing fight as well. I’m all for it to be honest with you.”

Stephen Thompson Has Two Fights Left on UFC Contract

Once riding an impressive 8-fight unbeaten streak in the welterweight division, `Wonderboy` has experienced a downturn in results, losing four of his last five contests. His recent outings include a knockout defeat to top contender Joaquin Buckley at UFC 307 in October, a fight in which he was reportedly performing well before the finish.

Approaching the conclusion of his career at 42 years old, Thompson mentioned having two fights remaining on his current UFC contract, indicating that a matchup with `The Fighting Nerd` is one he desires.

Thompson issued a direct plea: “Carlos, will you please sign the contract? Just sign the contract. Get out there, let’s have some fun. Let’s put on a show. Let’s punch each other in the face, and go have a beer afterwards.”

Referencing Prates` known habit, Thompson humorously added, “Maybe a few cigarettes on your part.”
