Lionel Messi, Inter Miami Eliminated from Concacaf Champions Cup Semis in Loss to Vancouver Whitecaps

In a crucial match, Inter Miami was decisively defeated 3-1 by the Vancouver Whitecaps at Chase Stadium on Wednesday, ending their run in the Concacaf Champions Cup semifinals. The Whitecaps advanced to the final, powered by a standout performance from Sebastian Berhalter, who contributed a goal and two assists. Berhalter’s display overshadowed even Lionel Messi, underscoring the competitive landscape of the tournament and sending the highly favored Miami side home.

Initially, Miami showed promise of replicating their quarterfinal comeback against Los Angeles FC when Jordi Alba scored just nine minutes in. However, Vancouver quickly recovered, maintaining the scoreline at a 1-0 Miami lead going into halftime.

Following the break, Vancouver’s coach, Jesper Sorensen, made effective tactical adjustments. Sebastian Berhalter continued to be influential, assisting goals for Brian White and Pedro Vite in rapid succession. These two goals dramatically shifted the momentum, and members of the Inter Miami squad visibly struggled, facing a seemingly insurmountable challenge even with Messi present. Berhalter then secured the victory with his own goal in the 71st minute, highlighting vulnerabilities that have recently appeared in the Miami defense.

Despite the team`s overall struggles, Messi has maintained strong individual form this season with eight goals and two assists across all competitions. However, key offensive support players are faltering, with Luis Suarez`s goalless streak reaching eight games and Tadeo Allende’s scoring form diminishing. The defense also continues to concede multiple goals. Following player departures like Leonardo Campana, Robert Taylor, and Julian Gressel, questions are being raised for Javier Mascherano and the team regarding the squad`s overall structure and depth.

With the Club World Cup on the horizon, Miami’s recent performance in late April suggests they could face difficulties advancing from the group stage if current trends persist. In contrast, the Whitecaps approached this match with a clear, well-executed team plan. While they may miss Berhalter in the final due to yellow card accumulation, their performance under Sorensen indicates they possess the capability to compete for the trophy even without a key player.

This disciplined, team-first approach is a lesson Miami needs to absorb, particularly given Messi’s eventual departure. The current team structure, perceived as being built around individual stars rather than a coherent unit, presents a concerning long-term outlook. However, the situation is not irreversible; recovery depends on whether coach Javier Mascherano can implement necessary changes. Failing to adapt could lead to a challenging period for the team.

Looking ahead, the Vancouver Whitecaps will face either Cruz Azul or Tigres in the Concacaf Champions Cup final scheduled for June 1.
