Lionel Messi to Discuss New Inter Miami Contract

Lionel Messi`s future looks set to remain with Inter Miami. Club co-owner Jorge Mas stated in a recent interview that discussions are underway regarding the Argentine superstar`s continued presence at the team.

Considered by many to be the greatest player of all time, Messi joined the Major League Soccer side in 2023 after a period with PSG and an iconic era at FC Barcelona, where he achieved unparalleled success. The Argentine legend, a World Cup winner in 2022, has made a significant impact in MLS, scoring 40 goals in 47 appearances and leading Miami to victory in the Leagues Cup in 2023 and the MLS Supporters` Shield in 2024.

His current agreement concludes at the end of this season. However, as Inter Miami prepares to inaugurate a new stadium in 2026, there`s a strong expectation that Messi will be part of that new chapter.

“My hope is that we will see our captain, number 10, Lionel Messi, in the new stadium. It’s his decision. We are in discussions with him about his future at the club,” Mas mentioned in an interview.

“Everything suggests a very bright future for both the club and Lionel. Ultimately, it’s his decision, but I believe we will finalize this in the coming months, as future planning is essential.”

“He will also become a club member after his playing career, potentially as a shareholder, aiming to create a lasting legacy for his children. We have a very good and respectful relationship with him, allowing him to enjoy his time here peacefully.”

While there has been speculation about a possible return to his boyhood club Newell`s in Argentina, extending his stay with Miami would make such a move less probable. As he approaches his 38th birthday in June, remaining in the United States through 2026 aligns well with the country co-hosting the 2026 World Cup alongside Mexico and Canada.

With Argentina potentially defending their World Cup title, staying in the United States offers numerous advantages for Messi. The Argentine national team frequently uses Miami as their base for competitions in the region, and the Argentina Football Association established an office in Miami in 2023.
