Manchester United have identified Matheus Cunha as a key target to strengthen their attacking options this summer, according to sources.
Cunha, the Wolverhampton Wanderers forward, has impressed in the Premier League this season. His contract includes an $83.5 million release clause that becomes active in the summer. It is anticipated that the Brazilian player will leave Molineux, and both Arsenal and Chelsea have also been mentioned as potential destinations.
This season, Cunha has scored 14 Premier League goals in 28 appearances for Wolves, a team battling against relegation. This is six more goals than any Manchester United player, highlighting United`s struggle to score goals throughout the campaign. In fact, United have scored 10 fewer goals than Wolves this season and are positioned 14th in the league, only ahead of Wolves due to a slightly better defense.
Adding more firepower to the team is a major priority for Manchester United in the upcoming summer transfer window. However, the extent of their investment in attacking players will depend on whether they secure Champions League qualification for next season. Their best chance to participate in the competition, and indeed any European competition, is by winning the Europa League. They are set to face Athletic Bilbao in the semi-finals.
Manchester United are also reportedly interested in Ipswich forward Liam Delap and Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, currently on loan at Galatasaray. Signing either of these players would not necessarily rule out a move for Cunha. He could potentially play as a central striker or in one of the two attacking positions behind the main forward in the team`s system.
Cunha has openly expressed his desire to leave Wolves. Following Wolves` 1-0 victory over Manchester United, which ensured they would avoid Premier League relegation, he stated in March, “I`ve made it clear that I need to take the next step. I want to compete for titles, for significant achievements. I believe I have the potential to do so.”
The 25-year-old joined Wolves from Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2023 and has scored 32 goals in 87 appearances across all competitions.
