Ukrainian tennis player Marta Kostyuk, ranked 27th in the world, extended a handshake to Daria Kasatkina, the world No. 15, following their second-round match at the WTA 1000 tournament held in Rome.
Historically, Kostyuk has not shaken hands with players representing Russia and Belarus. However, Kasatkina changed her citizenship in 2025 and now competes under the Australian flag. Prior to the encounter, the Ukrainian player stated her respect for Kasatkina`s decision and described her action as brave.
The match itself concluded with a victory for Kostyuk in straight sets, resulting in Kasatkina`s elimination from the Rome tournament.
