UFC women`s flyweight contender Maycee Barber has issued her first statement since her abrupt withdrawal from the UFC Vegas 107 main event, addressing comments made by her opponent, Erin Blanchfield, after the event.
The highly anticipated main event of UFC Vegas 107 on Saturday night was scheduled to feature a clash between top 5 flyweights Maycee Barber and Erin Blanchfield, concluding a tumultuous fight week. However, just minutes before the fighters were due to enter the Octagon, the headlining bout was derailed by an issue on Barber`s side.
Following the final pre-fight promotional video at the UFC Apex for the main event, both Blanchfield and Barber failed to make their immediate walkouts. This led to significant confusion among viewers and attendees, as the UFC broadcast team scrambled to understand the situation.
It was subsequently announced that Barber experienced a medical issue in her locker room just as she and her team were preparing for her walkout against Blanchfield. The fight was instantly called off, resulting in UFC Vegas 107 concluding without its scheduled main event.
Maycee Barber Discusses Medical Incident and Responds to Erin Blanchfield Following UFC Vegas 107 Pullout
This marked one of the strangest conclusions to a UFC event in recent memory. Barber was reportedly transported to a local hospital after allegedly experiencing a seizure. In contrast, Blanchfield offered a critical immediate reaction to the fight`s cancellation, notably just hours after she had publicly speculated that Barber might withdraw.
Nearly 24 hours after the startling events at UFC Vegas 107, Barber used social media to provide an update on her condition and address Blanchfield`s critical comments.
Via an Instagram post, Barber shared her initial public statement since the incident at UFC Vegas 107.
“Not what I had planned for a Sunday post,” Barber`s statement began.
“Thank you to everyone for the prayers & support. I owe an apology to [the UFC, Mick Maynard, Dana White, Sean Shelby] and Erin Blanchfield.”
Her message concluded, “PS my life is not messy this is just a bad hand. We will get to the bottom of it all and be back.”
Barber`s closing comment appeared to reference Blanchfield`s earlier remark that Barber`s `entire life is a mess`, following Blanchfield`s criticism of Barber`s conduct as `super unprofessional`. Notably, Barber had missed weight by 1.5 pounds hours before the scheduled fight, the first time she had done so in her UFC career.
Following UFC Vegas 107, Blanchfield indicated she was not interested in an immediate rematch, suggesting Barber should consider moving up to the bantamweight division permanently. However, based on Barber`s recent statement, it seems she has no immediate plans for significant changes to her fighting weight or career path.
Maycee Barber`s Last-Minute Withdrawal Caps Off Strange UFC Vegas 107 Fight Week
Barber`s medical issue was not the only unusual occurrence during the UFC Vegas 107 fight week. Several other fighters also failed to make weight, including flyweight Allan Nascimento, although he still competed and defeated Jafel Filho on the night.
A planned welterweight bout between Andreas Gustafsson and Trevin Giles was also canceled due to Giles reportedly sustaining a head injury during his weight cut. Gustafsson is now scheduled to fight Khaos Williams at UFC 316 in Newark this Saturday.
This was intended to be Barber`s first fight since her victory over former title challenger Katlyn Cerminara at UFC 299.
