French tennis star Gael Monfils has explained his decision to withdraw from the ongoing clay court Masters tournament in Madrid, Spain. Monfils was scheduled to face Russia`s Andrey Rublev in the second round.
However, it was confirmed on the day the match was due to take place that Monfils was unable to compete because of health issues.
“I am very sick,” Monfils revealed in a video posted on social media. “It`s unfortunate, but I had to pull out of the tournament. I hope to recover quickly and will provide further updates.”
Monfils` withdrawal means Andrey Rublev advances to the next round via walkover.
