Gotham FC has banned a fan and revoked their season ticket after an investigation showed they used hateful language towards Orlando Pride`s Barbra Banda.
Gotham FC said in a statement on Wednesday that they conducted a thorough investigation with the NWSL, staff, and stadium security. They interviewed witnesses, reviewed security footage, and found the fan violated the NWSL Fan Code of Conduct.
The incident occurred at Sports Illustrated Stadium during Gotham`s 2-0 loss to Pride on March 23, leading to the investigation. Gotham stated stadium security responded quickly, addressed the individual, and monitored the situation. Gotham, Pride, and the NWSL also issued statements supporting Banda.
This is not the first time Banda has faced hateful language, notably from J.K. Rowling in November after Banda was named BBC`s Woman Footballer of the Year. Rowling misgendered Banda in a post on X.
The Pride, NWSL Players Association, and Meghann Burke defended Banda, with Burke strongly rebuking Rowling`s comments.
Burke wrote on X, calling Rowling`s insults racist and lies. She emphasized Banda`s value to NWSLPA and declared their collective support, saying they would all stand up for her.
