NWSL Power Rankings: Kansas City Current the Class of the League, But Washington Spirit Not Far Behind

Following the international break, the 2025 NWSL regular season resumed, and the short pause proved beneficial. With the midpoint of the season approaching rapidly, it feels like an opportune moment to update the power rankings. However, despite the brief hiatus in the schedule, the fundamental power dynamics between teams haven`t changed significantly.

Kansas City continues to assert its dominance, performing like league leaders. San Diego is progressing quickly with its roster reconstruction. The teams in the middle remain closely matched, with indistinct boundaries, while Chicago and Utah are merely trying to navigate the season. A look at where teams have been compared to where they are headed might offer insight into their trajectories.

Week 12 is fast approaching, promising more exciting matches. Fans can catch select regular season games on various CBS platforms.

2025 NWSL Power Rankings

Rank Team Change Analysis

1.

Kansas City Current

Temwa Chawinga remains a strong contender for another NWSL Golden Boot. The team has effectively managed recent injury concerns and makes staying atop the league appear effortless.

2.

Washington Spirit

Head coach Jonatan Giraldez is set to depart for Lyon in July, but the players continue to perform strongly regardless of the coaching situation.

3.

Orlando Pride

While they may appear vulnerable at times, Orlando remains a top-tier side requiring a significant effort to overcome. They exhibit the resilience of champions; defender Cori Dyke stood out as a key player this past week.

4.

San Diego Wave FC

After struggling to score last season, this year they are finding the net more easily. However, they faced challenges securing a home win in Week 11. Despite effort, they aren`t quite able to break into the top three yet.

5.

Seattle Reign FC

+3

Seattle`s form has been somewhat inconsistent this season, yet this unpredictability seems to be propelling them up the rankings. Coach Laura Harvey is actively rotating the squad and adjusting tactics to maintain their competitive edge.

6.

Angel City FC

New head coach Alexander Straus had his first game, showcasing the talent of their younger players. However, drawing against a struggling opponent raises concerns as the season reaches its midpoint.

7.

Gotham FC

-2

Gotham has had an unusual first half, navigating injuries and a difficult schedule. While they showed some boost after their recent Concacaf W Champions Cup victory, it seems probable they may drop further in future rankings.

8.

Portland Thorns FC

-1

Portland created numerous opportunities and often played well in Week 11 but failed to convert their momentum into goals. This is unfortunately becoming a pattern and could lead to a continued slide in rankings if not corrected.

9.

Racing Louisville FC

+1

This feels familiar: Racing goes on a positive run, nearing playoff contention, but perhaps not at the most opportune time. While I hope this is their breakthrough year, they need to prove themselves more consistently against top teams.

10.

North Carolina Courage

-1

They played one of their best games this season in Week 11 yet still couldn`t secure a win. However, there are positives, such as the strong performances from Courtnee Vine and Manaka Matsukubo.

11.

Bay FC

+1

The question for Bay FC since Week 1 has been whether `better` is `enough`. It was sufficient to move up one spot in the rankings, but their long-term prospects remain uncertain.

12.

Houston Dash

-1

It`s frustrating to hold one of the league`s best teams scoreless for 90 minutes only to concede in stoppage time. This was a tough loss, but hopefully one that provides motivation for Week 12.

13.

Utah Royals FC

+1

Utah`s midfield is showing improved form and acting as a promising catalyst. However, they are lacking the final product this year, and time is running out.

14.

Chicago Stars FC

-1

Interim manager Masaki Hemmi adjusted the formation, which nearly succeeded but ultimately fell short. Chicago`s challenging season continues.
