Mauricio Ruffy, with only three fights in his UFC career, is already drawing comparisons to Conor McGregor.
This isn`t the first time the Brazilian fighter has been likened to McGregor, with his karate-based style being noted since his UFC debut last year. Representing ‘The Fighting Nerds’, the 28-year-old quickly defeated Jamie Mullarkey in a dominant performance.
Ruffy continued his success by overwhelming James Llontop over three rounds and recently delivered a spectacular spinning heel kick knockout against King Green at UFC 313.
Despite being unranked, Ruffy is gaining popularity due to his unique fighting style, which reminds commentators like Joe Rogan and top welterweight contender Ian Machado Garry of the early Conor McGregor, who previously held UFC titles in two weight classes.
Mauricio Ruffy`s “Old-School Conor McGregor” Style
Conor McGregor achieved an undefeated record in the Octagon at 145lbs, utilizing a karate style focused on footwork and distance control, and securing knockouts with diverse strikes – similar to Ruffy`s current approach.
Ian Garry, who was inspired by McGregor from a young age, considers Mauricio Ruffy his current favorite UFC fighter.
“His style is phenomenal, and I love watching it. It really reminds me of an old-school Conor McGregor,” Garry commented on Ruffy’s style on social media.
“His style is impressive. I think his movement is exceptional, and I’m excited to see his career progress.”
“He’s definitely one of my favorite fighters in the UFC,” Garry added.
Mauricio Ruffy Wants to Train with Ian Machado Garry
Ian Machado Garry, ranked #7 in the welterweight division, is himself a highly skilled striker. The Irish fighter has a UFC record of 8-1 and has trained with notable figures like former champion Charles Oliveira.
It turns out Ruffy is also an admirer of Ian Machado Garry and has studied his previous fights. Eager to learn, Ruffy expressed interest in training with Machado Garry in the future.
“It was funny to wake up and see this video,” Ruffy responded to Garry on social media.
“From someone who I’m a big fan of, and who I study and watch all of your fights.
“To hear you say that you admire my style makes me very happy.
“I hope to have the opportunity to train together one day. God Bless!”
