Pozzecco’s Heartfelt Dream: Polonara’s Presence at EuroBasket

Italy’s Achille Polonara dunks against Lithuania during the 2024 FIBA Men`s Olympic Qualifying Tournament basketball match between Italy and Lithuania in San Juan, Puerto Rico, on July 6, 2024.

Italy national basketball coach Gianmarco Pozzecco has publicly shared a deeply personal and poignant hope regarding forward Achille Polonara, a key player currently undergoing treatment for myeloid leukemia.

In a recent interview with the portal Eurodevotion, Coach Pozzecco revealed that his primary “dream” for the upcoming EuroBasket tournament isn`t centered on strategic victories or team performance alone, but on the human element. He expressed a fervent desire to have Polonara join the national team in some capacity, ideally as part of the technical staff.

Polonara, a significant figure for the Azzurri squad, received his diagnosis during the Italian league semifinals between Virtus Bologna and Olimpia Milano. He is presently receiving necessary medical treatment in Valencia, a situation that naturally prevents him from competing on the court.

Pozzecco highlighted the continuous connection, stating, “I talk to Achille every day.” He acknowledged the logistical challenges and the uncertainty surrounding Polonara`s health journey, but passionately articulated the symbolic power his presence would bring. “I don`t know if it will be possible, but I dream of having him with us. It would be a very strong signal,” the coach remarked, underscoring the importance of solidarity beyond the game itself.

While the high-stakes world of professional sports typically focuses on physical readiness and winning results, Pozzecco`s candid statement offers a perspective shift. His public “dream” subtly, perhaps even ironically given the usual sports discourse, prioritizes human connection and support for a teammate facing a life-altering challenge. Having Polonara present, even off the court, would serve as a powerful testament to unity and resilience for the entire team as they prepare for the group stage in Cyprus alongside their established staff.
