Real Madrid defender Antonio Rudiger is potentially facing a significant suspension, ranging from four to twelve matches, after an incident during the Copa del Rey final loss against Barcelona on Saturday. The player has since issued an apology for his actions.
Rudiger, who had been substituted in the 111th minute, received a red card from the bench in the 123rd minute. His reaction stemmed from disagreement with the referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea`s decision to award a foul against Kylian Mbappe, which stopped a potential late Real Madrid attack before the final whistle. Witnessing the call from the sideline, Rudiger threw an object in the direction of the referee and had to be restrained by teammates due to his evident frustration.
In his official post-match report, the referee stated that Rudiger was shown a red card “for throwing an object from the technical area which did not reach me.” The report also noted that after being shown the card, Rudiger displayed an “aggressive attitude” and needed to be held back by members of the coaching staff.
Rudiger later expressed his regret on social media, apologizing for his behavior at the end of the game.
“There`s definitely no excuse for my behaviour last night. I`m very sorry for that,” Rudiger wrote. He added that he had made a “mistake” after being substituted and unable to help his team further, concluding with another apology to the referee and anyone he had disappointed.
He wasn`t the only Real Madrid player dismissed in the closing minutes. Lucas Vazquez, who had also been substituted, was sent off for protesting a decision, entering the field of play, and making gestures of disagreement, according to the referee`s report. Jude Bellingham also received a red card for approaching the referee with an “aggressive attitude” and needing to be held back by his teammates.
While Vazquez and Bellingham are likely to receive standard two-match bans applicable to the Copa del Rey next season, Rudiger`s case is being considered under different disciplinary rules within the Royal Spanish Football Federation. Given his conduct, he could potentially be charged under section 101, which covers “Mild violence toward the referees,” such as grabbing, pushing, shaking, or similar attitudes, and carries a potential suspension of four to twelve matches.
Crucially, a ban under this specific section would apply to all domestic matches, including La Liga fixtures, and not just the Copa del Rey. Such a suspension could begin as early as Real Madrid`s next match scheduled for May 4th. This timing is highly significant for Real Madrid`s season, as they are currently only four points behind Barcelona in the La Liga title race with just five games remaining, including a decisive El Clasico encounter set for May 11th. A lengthy ban for Rudiger would significantly impact their defense during this critical period.
