Thomas Partey Favors Arsenal Stay Over Spanish, Saudi Arabian Interest

Thomas Partey is reportedly leaning towards extending his contract with Arsenal, despite receiving interest from clubs in Saudi Arabia and Spain. The Ghanaian midfielder was previously expected to depart the Emirates Stadium when his current deal concludes this summer. However, manager Mikel Arteta recently suggested that Arsenal is prepared to offer an extension to the player, who is set to turn 32 in June.

Beyond interest from Saudi Arabian teams, European clubs including Juventus and Barcelona have also been linked with Partey. Notably, his former club, Atletico Madrid, is also understood to be a potential destination. Partey`s tenure at Arsenal since joining in 2020 has been affected by injuries, but his form has improved significantly in recent months, which is thought to have prompted renewed discussions about his future at the club.

Despite Partey`s apparent preference to stay, a contract extension is not yet confirmed. Arsenal is reportedly seeking terms that would guarantee his presence for the upcoming season, with an option for an additional twelve months. This proposal has not been dismissed by Partey, but the salary package remains a crucial factor. He currently earns over $250,000 per week, positioning him among the highest earners at Arsenal. Reports indicate the club would likely aim for a reduced base salary in any new agreement.

Furthermore, Partey`s role within the first team could potentially decrease. Arsenal is reportedly confident about signing Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad, having prepared for the arrival of the Spanish international throughout the current season. While Real Madrid has also been linked with Zubimendi, there is optimism within Arsenal that they will secure the transfer.

When asked about the progress of Partey`s contract discussions last week, Arteta stated: “There is progress with all the players. I`ll leave that to [sporting director] Andrea [Berta] and the club to decide and to talk about.”

Amidst the potential arrival of Zubimendi and the ongoing talks with Partey, fellow defensive midfielder Jorginho is widely expected to leave when his contract expires. The Italian international has been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia but is reportedly favoring clubs in Brazil, with Flamengo frequently mentioned as a possible destination. A recent rib injury may impact the 33-year-old`s remaining time this season, though he has earned considerable respect at Arsenal for his influence both on and off the pitch.
