Interim UFC heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall is now more confident about fighting Jon Jones after a recent meeting with UFC management.
Despite previous doubts, Aspinall believes he will finally face heavyweight champion Jon Jones in the Octagon later this year.
Aspinall last fought in July, defending his interim title against Curtis Blaydes. He won the interim belt by defeating Sergei Pavlovich after Jones withdrew from their scheduled fight due to injury.
Negotiations for the Jones vs. Aspinall fight have been uncertain, but there are indications that news about the heavyweight title fight is coming soon.
Tom Aspinall Discusses Positive Meeting with UFC Officials in London
Jon Jones initially dismissed fighting Aspinall before his planned fight with Stipe Miocic. After that fight was cancelled and Jones hinted at a 2025 return, talks began for a heavyweight title unification fight with Aspinall.
Aspinall recently expressed frustration about the status of the Jones fight. However, after meeting with a UFC executive in London, he feels much more positive.
In an interview, Aspinall described his meeting with UFC executive Hunter Campbell in London. He mentioned the meeting took place late at night and involved a meal and discussions.
Aspinall said the meeting was “fantastic” and that he now understands his position and the UFC`s plans. He hinted at upcoming “big news.”
Aspinall addressed his previous comments about his patience wearing thin regarding the Jones fight.
He stated he feels “in a good spot” after the meeting and is optimistic about his future. He emphasized his desire to fight and expressed excitement about what`s next.
Aspinall`s positive comments follow Jones leading a chant against him at an event for a fight promotion Jones co-owns.
Tom Aspinall Trolls Jon Jones at UFC London Event
Aspinall responded to Jones`s taunts by jokingly trolling Jones with a duck gesture at UFC London. Aspinall and fans have accused Jones of avoiding a fight with him.
A fight between Jones and Aspinall could potentially headline UFC`s International Fight Week, depending on Jones`s training camp requirements. Reports suggest Jones wanted a six-month camp, but this is not confirmed.
For now, the wait continues for a confirmed date for Jones vs. Aspinall, but progress is being made for this heavyweight clash.
