Rafael Nadal`s uncle and former coach, Toni Nadal, offered his perspective on recent comments made by Carlos Alcaraz regarding the challenges of being a professional tennis player. Alcaraz had discussed these difficulties in a documentary series for Netflix.
“If it`s overwhelming him, he should leave tennis,” Toni Nadal stated plainly. “I understand things differently in life. In sports, there`s a tendency to exaggerate everything. I`ve often heard people talk about the sacrifices of sports, heard about the sacrifices of Real Madrid players, and thought: `Sacrifices?` Life itself involves sacrifices, not just doing what you want. Sometimes it`s worth it, sometimes it`s not. If it`s not worth it, a person is better off finding another job.”
He continued by defining his view on sacrifice. “For me, a sacrifice is something you do for others. When you do it for yourself, it`s a price you pay. Alcaraz, being an excellent tennis player, certainly pays a price, that`s true. But, on the other hand, he earns significantly more than the vast majority of people his age, he has enormous public recognition and experiences that very few people have.”
