Trent Alexander-Arnold on Settling In at Real Madrid and Working with Xabi Alonso

Moving to a new country and a new club can be challenging, particularly when unfamiliar with the language. For Trent Alexander-Arnold, who spent his entire career at Liverpool since his Premier League debut at 17, this is his current reality following his transfer to Real Madrid in La Liga.

While it was once uncommon for English players to leave the Premier League, there`s been a noticeable rise in young English talents making the move abroad. Alexander-Arnold is the latest to join this group after his summer transfer to Real Madrid. The move was accelerated, with Los Blancos paying over $11 million to secure him before the Club World Cup, allowing the Englishman crucial time to integrate.

As Real Madrid prepare for their Club World Cup match against Juventus, the focus has shifted firmly towards winning trophies. Alexander-Arnold commented on his progress, stating, “The settling-in period is complete, and it`s now about pushing forward, being the best player I can be, giving my all for the team, and helping us win as many games as possible, starting with this competition.”

Real Madrid`s constant objective is victory in every competition, a goal Alexander-Arnold is familiar with from his time at Liverpool, but one that is even more emphasized here. Despite joining recently on June 1st through a special transfer window for Club World Cup participants, Alexander-Arnold has integrated well. Significant credit goes to the staff for providing the extra support needed to make the transition smooth in under a month.

He elaborated on the support received: “The manager communicates with me a lot individually to ensure I understand everything that`s said, as other meetings are in Spanish. Both he and the staff make a special effort to ensure I understand every detail of the game plan. Stepping onto the pitch feels the same regardless of the club or playing internationally; you`re playing against a team, and you have a job to do.”

The atmosphere at Real Madrid has been welcoming for Alexander-Arnold. The presence of fellow countryman Jude Bellingham in the squad is also a significant help. With an expected key role in Xabi Alonso`s system, Alexander-Arnold is poised to contribute significantly to Real Madrid`s ambition of regaining the La Liga title. The adaptation isn`t limited to the pitch; adjusting to the cultural differences in Spain is also part of the process.

Alexander-Arnold discussed the challenges: “Language is the most difficult aspect, and it will take time to adapt. However, I felt confident and comfortable coming into the game. It was always going to take a few matches to get accustomed to playing with new teammates in a new environment and under a new coach. That was anticipated, but I`m happy with how I`ve settled. The players have been very welcoming, making me feel at home, comfortable, and allowing me to play my natural game.”

Amidst the changes at Real Madrid, such as the transition from Carlo Ancelotti, insights like Alexander-Arnold`s highlight Xabi Alonso`s capability in managing players. A crucial part of successful management is making players feel settled and motivated to perform at their best, which appears to be happening at Real Madrid, including for young talents who are getting opportunities.

Mounting a successful challenge against Barcelona for the La Liga crown will require significant effort and factors falling into place. However, securing silverware this summer would serve as a positive indicator that the team is progressing in the right direction.
