UFC Heavyweight Contender Alexander Volkov Explains Understanding of Jon Jones Not Being Stripped

Jon Jones has held the UFC heavyweight championship for over two years, despite defending it only once.

There`s a growing sentiment that the division needs to move forward, regardless of the champion`s plans.

Fans have even started a petition for the UFC to strip Jones of the belt, a move that ‘Bones’ himself recently acknowledged on social media.

He appears unconcerned about public opinion regarding his title reign or its effect on the division, particularly how interim champion Tom Aspinall is being forced to remain inactive.

Another top heavyweight recently shared his view, stating that the delay involving Jones and Aspinall is also negatively impacting his own career.

Alexander Volkov Discusses UFC`s Decision on Jon Jones` Title Amidst Division Stagnation

As the #3-ranked contender in the heavyweight division, Alexander Volkov is currently ranked behind only Ciryl Gane, Tom Aspinall, and Jon Jones.

In his most recent fight, the Russian lost a split decision to Gane, a result many, including Dana White, felt he deserved to win.

Under normal circumstances, Volkov would likely be next in line for a title shot, which contributes to his frustration. He previously stated that the UFC is giving Jones `privileges` that he is taking advantage of.

However, in a new interview, ‘Drago’ (Volkov) said that while the situation isn`t ideal for him personally, he can understand the promotion`s reasoning for not stripping ‘Bones’.

He explained: “Well, if we consider this a true sport, probably yes [he should be stripped], but the UFC is a show business first of all. Jon Jones generates a lot of money for the organization. From a financial standpoint, he’s good for business. Even with his current status, he brings attention.”

Volkov continued, asserting that even though Jones isn`t currently active, he has done more for the UFC than any other top names in the division right now.

He added, “He’s done, and is still doing, much more for the UFC than any of us therefore his value as a champion should be calculated not just in terms of the sport, but also in terms of his media presence. So, if the UFC keeps him, that means it’s good business for them.”

Volkov Declined a Matchup with Another Top Heavyweight

While Alexander Volkov, at 36, isn`t getting any younger, he doesn`t seem interested in taking fights just to stay active.

Reports circulated last month about a potential bout between the Russian and Brazil’s Jailton Almeida, who currently holds the #6 ranking.

Volkov dismissed these rumors via a video posted on his social media, stating that he “didn’t see any point in fighting the 6th ranked fighter.”

Having already faced other elite contenders like Gane, Sergei Pavlovich, and Curtis Blaydes, Alexander Volkov`s next move in the heavyweight division remains uncertain at this time.
