A significant weekend unfolded for several players representing the U.S. men`s national team in Europe, as Malik Tillman and Chris Richards notably secured major trophies for their respective clubs in dramatic fashion in the Netherlands and England.
Tillman`s Triumph with PSV in the Eredivisie
Malik Tillman was on the scoresheet in PSV Eindhoven`s 3-1 victory over Sparta Rotterdam on Sunday, a result that sealed PSV`s status as back-to-back Eredivisie champions following one of the most thrilling title races in Europe this season. PSV held a narrow one-point lead over Ajax heading into the final matchday, making a win crucial for guaranteeing the title. Both PSV and Ajax, facing Twente, took early leads in their games. However, Gjivai Zechiel`s equalizer for Sparta in the 52nd minute temporarily propelled Ajax to the top spot.
Ajax`s time at the summit was short-lived. Just six minutes later, Luuk de Jong restored PSV`s lead. Tillman then cemented the victory for the Eindhoven side, netting his goal after a header from Guus Til directed the ball into his path. This marked Tillman`s 15th goal across all competitions this season, complementing his five assists.
USMNT teammate Sergino Dest completed the full 90 minutes, marking his return to consistent play after sustaining an ACL tear last year. Ricardo Pepi, another American international, will also receive a winner`s medal, having contributed 17 goals over 28 appearances before being sidelined since January with a knee injury.
The final day`s tension in the Netherlands capped off a dramatic period where Ajax lost a significant advantage in the title race. They had held a nine-point lead over PSV with only seven matches remaining, built on a 14-game unbeaten league run while PSV had won just two of their previous nine. However, Ajax won only three of their last seven games, conversely, PSV surged with seven consecutive victories. PSV officially leapfrogged Ajax midweek after a 4-1 win against Heracles, coupled with Ajax`s 2-2 draw at Groningen. PSV ultimately finished the season two points clear at the top.
PSV`s title success secures their return to the UEFA Champions League next season, while Ajax will also rejoin the competition for the first time since the 2022-23 campaign.
Richards and Crystal Palace Lift the FA Cup
The excitement in the Netherlands followed a historic moment in England the previous day, where Crystal Palace triumphed over Manchester City 1-0 in the FA Cup final, securing the club`s first major trophy as a top-flight side.
Eberechi Eze scored the decisive goal in the 16th minute. This set the stage for a match dominated by Manchester City`s relentless but ultimately unsuccessful pursuit of an equalizer. Key moments included Dean Henderson`s penalty save from City`s Omar Marmoush in the 36th minute, a stop that came after a period of controversy where the Palace goalkeeper arguably could have been dismissed earlier for handling the ball outside his area.
Despite City registering 23 shots and exerting immense pressure, Palace`s defense held firm, thanks to critical last-ditch interventions from several players. Chris Richards was a standout, making 11 clearances and blocking six shots at Wembley Stadium, in addition to winning four of his five aerial duels. His performance was central to Palace`s defensive resilience, which enabled them to become only the second club outside of England`s traditional `big six` to win the FA Cup in the last twelve years.
`We just tried to keep it one play at a time,` Richards commented after the match. `The first 15 minutes, we didn’t touch the ball. So we’re just thinking, if we can just do our job and let the guys up front put one or two in, that’s exactly what we’re gonna do. And I think our first attack, we scored. So I mean, we’re a really tight group. A shutout starts from the front, so all 11 that played, 11 that started today, was a part of the clean sheet.`
Richards joins his club and country teammate Matt Turner as an FA Cup winner. Turner made three appearances earlier in the competition before first-choice keeper Henderson took over for the later stages. Richards and Turner are the second and third American players to win the FA Cup, following Tim Howard`s success with Manchester United in 2004.
