The U.S. Men`s National Team secured their place in the Gold Cup semifinals on Sunday, but not without a challenge. They advanced after a dramatic 2-2 draw against Costa Rica was followed by a 4-3 victory in a penalty shootout.

The match began poorly for the USMNT, conceding a penalty in the 11th minute, converted by Francisco Calvo for a 1-0 Costa Rica lead. Despite a lively first half with numerous chances, Malik Tillman missed a penalty in the 37th minute. However, Diego Luna equalized in the 41st minute, a deserved reward for their pressure, and Max Arfsten put the U.S. ahead in the 49th. The U.S. then dropped their intensity, and Alonso Martinez capitalized with a 71st-minute equalizer, sending the game to penalties. In a tense six-round shootout, goalkeeper Matt Freese made three crucial saves, and Damion Downs scored the winning penalty to send the USMNT through.

Goalkeeper Matt Freese had a standout performance, emerging as an unlikely hero. Initially an understudy, injuries thrust him into the starting role. Despite previous inconsistent form, the 26-year-old proved his worth in the shootout, drawing on his experience from youth soccer where matches often go to penalties. Freese mentioned studying opponent penalties extensively, stating, “Penalties are my thing… I`ve been studying them all week and was ready for it.” Luna also impressed, showing his competitive spirit and scoring a vital equalizer. Arfsten contributed significantly to the team`s early energy, despite his earlier penalty concession.

Favorites Prevail in Club World Cup Knockouts

The Club World Cup knockout stage is in progress, with the quarterfinals taking shape. The initial field included teams from various continents, but as the knockout rounds have unfolded, the favored teams, particularly those from Europe, appear to be asserting dominance.

Predictable outcomes include Paris Saint-Germain`s comfortable 4-0 win over Inter Miami. Lionel Messi`s MLS side struggled against the UEFA Champions League winners, highlighting the challenge when one player carries too much responsibility, as noted by James Benge. Benge commented that this Inter Miami team, built around Messi and former teammates, seemed ill-equipped to face the world`s top teams, unlike previous sides where he had more support around him.

Other matches saw Chelsea defeat Benfica after extra time following a weather delay, and Palmeiras won the all-Brazilian tie against Botafogo. Bayern Munich`s 4-2 victory over Flamengo sets up potential dominance from Europe in the quarterfinals. Two Round of 16 ties were between European and South American teams (Bayern/Flamengo and Inter/Fluminense), suggesting Palmeiras might be the only CONMEBOL team left. The remaining ties also favor Europe, with Real Madrid facing Juventus, Manchester City playing Al-Hilal (favoring City), and Borussia Dortmund favored against Monterrey.

This trend suggests the later stages of the tournament may lack surprises and the global variety seen earlier, potentially becoming heavily focused on European teams.
