Veteran Voices Doubt on Conor McGregor’s UFC Comeback Hints

Nearly five years have passed since Conor McGregor last stepped into the UFC Octagon, a significant hiatus following a leg injury sustained in July 2021. Despite this prolonged absence, the former two-division champion frequently fuels speculation about his return, most recently by expressing interest in a truly unique potential event.

The talk centers around the UFC`s announced intention to host an event at the White House in 2026, a concept initially mentioned by former U.S. President Donald Trump and later confirmed by UFC CEO Dana White as part of the United States` 250th anniversary celebrations. White stated that logistics discussions with government officials are underway.

Following President Trump`s announcement, McGregor was quick to hint at his potential participation. However, a voice from his past is openly questioning the sincerity of these teases.

Eddie Alvarez Skeptical, Suggests Opponents

Eddie Alvarez, whom McGregor defeated in 2016 to make history as the first simultaneous two-division UFC champion, isn`t convinced that McGregor`s recent comments signify a definite comeback. In a recent interview, Alvarez weighed in on the speculation, stating, “Only Conor knows that. I don’t think so.”

Despite his skepticism regarding the likelihood of a return, Alvarez entertained the idea by suggesting potential opponents if McGregor were indeed serious. The most prominent name remains Michael Chandler, a fight that has been anticipated since the two coached The Ultimate Fighter opposite each other.

Alvarez also brought up Mike Perry, the star of Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship (BKFC). Perry recently had a public, albeit lighthearted, interaction with McGregor and has indicated willingness to compete against him in MMA at 170 lbs. Alvarez described this potential matchup as “real interesting.”

Talk vs. Action

While McGregor continues to generate headlines with hints and suggestions about future fights and potential venues like the White House, the actual date and opponent for any potential return remain unconfirmed. His extended period away from active competition leads many, including former rivals like Alvarez, to view the ongoing discussions with a degree of caution.

The combat sports world often finds itself navigating the line between promotional talk and concrete plans, particularly when it involves `The Notorious`. As discussions continue regarding the unprecedented White House event, and McGregor keeps the possibility of his return alive, the ultimate question remains: will the talk translate into another walk to the Octagon?
