Yunus Musah Reportedly Nears Napoli Move from AC Milan

According to multiple reports, Napoli is nearing an agreement to sign American midfielder Yunus Musah from AC Milan for approximately $25 million. Musah, who turns 23 this year, arrived at AC Milan in the summer of 2023 alongside his USMNT teammate Christian Pulisic. Unlike Pulisic, Musah has not yet made a significant impact. However, Napoli is now prepared to offer him a contract. A move to Napoli under coach Antonio Conte this summer is seen as an ideal opportunity for both the player and the United States men`s national team, who need Musah at his best leading up to the 2026 World Cup. Musah`s two years at AC Milan included periods of inconsistent form, during which he played a total of 80 matches across all competitions. His struggles were not entirely his fault, partly attributed to the managerial changes the club experienced since his arrival.

Upon his arrival in Serie A, former AC Milan manager Stefano Pioli viewed Musah as a versatile midfielder capable of playing various roles. However, Pioli departed after one season. The club subsequently appointed Paulo Fonseca, followed by Sergio Conceicao. The frequent changes in coaching leadership contributed to a lack of stability.

Throughout his two seasons at AC Milan, Musah was deployed in numerous midfield positions, including central midfield, right-central midfield, and occasionally even as an attacking winger or right back. While this versatility contributed to his 80 appearances, it also arguably hindered his ability to establish himself as a consistent starter in a single role.

This is where a move to Napoli and working under Antonio Conte could be pivotal for Musah`s career. He requires a coach who will consistently trust him in a specific midfield role and provide the regular game time necessary for him to develop into a key player. Napoli`s participation in the Champions League next season, alongside Serie A and the Coppa Italia, will necessitate squad rotation, offering Musah ample opportunities. Napoli`s decision to pursue Musah rather than permanently signing Philip Billing, who was a regular rotational option, signals significant confidence from both the club and Conte in Musah`s potential to take the next step. If any manager can help him achieve this, it is Conte. While only time will reveal if the transfer proves successful, a positive outcome would undoubtedly benefit Napoli, the player himself, and the USMNT in preparation for the 2026 World Cup.
