The Zambian Football Association (FAZ) has removed four players from the National Women`s Soccer League (NWSL) from their national team roster for the upcoming Yongchuan International Tournament in China this month. The decision is based on worries regarding the United States` updated travel regulations.
Barbra Banda, Grace Chanda, and Prisca Chilufya from Orlando Pride, along with Rachael Kundananji of Bay FC, were initially selected for the tournament. However, to prevent potential complications when attempting to re-enter the U.S. to rejoin their respective club teams, they will not be making the trip during this international break.
According to FAZ General Secretary Reuben Kamanga, the withdrawal of these four players is a result of `additional travel measures introduced by the new administration in the United States of America.` In a statement released on Wednesday, Kamanga explained that this decision was made following advice from key sources, including the U.S. Embassy in Zambia and the players` clubs, concluding that withdrawing the players from the China assignment was the most prudent course of action.
It is anticipated that these players will be available for selection in future matches.
The specific U.S. travel policies causing concern for the FAZ remain unclear. However, it`s noted that under the Trump administration, numerous foreign individuals, including valid visa and green card holders, have faced detention at U.S. borders.
